Permanent Baggage
Materials
Fabric-
I use a wide range of reclaimed fabrics. Vintage silk blends, burlap sacks, leather, upholstery samples, clothing, and cloth remnants are but a few examples All fabrics are evaluated for durability before use. As needed, fabrics are cleaned and a structural backing applied.
Plastic Bags-
Plastic is the main material used in each bag. It is collected locally from numerous residential sources. I also source a large quantity of plastic waste from Careers Industries. They are a non-profit organization that works to employ individuals with developmental disabilities. One of the numerous services they provide is the production of trash can liners. To learn more about Careers Industries please visit the ‘Contact’ page.
Closures, Clasps, and Accents-
Two major closure systems are used: magnetic and zipper. I also use a wide variety of beads, buttons, trims, and laces, All of which are purchased secondhand as frequently as possible.
Wood Scraps-
A variety of hardwood scraps are used to create the wooden handles. Wood scraps are acquired from local woodworking shops or reclaimed directly from spent pieces of furniture. Handles are finished with tung oil; a natural non-toxic finish. I like to use the left over sawdust and wood chips in my compost beds.
Packaging and Shipping-
Branding tags and business cards are printed on recycled card stock using green printers. For shipping I use as little packaging material as possible. The bags are wrapped in a simple piece of recycled newsprint or packed in biodegradable potato peanuts, and packaged in a proportionately sized envelope or box. This also aids in minimal shipping costs.
